Sadao China / 赤花 "Akabana" [12-inch] TBV-0030

[Description]

The pioneering figure who spread Okinawan music to the world, Sadao China, released his mainland debut album Akabanain in 1978.

Finally, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's return to Japan, the reissue of this album has been decided!

Based on island folk songs, Akabana innovatively blends elements of reggae, soul, and rock, creating a laid-back and unique vibe that defines Okinawan pop music. This precious album includes numerous originals such as the hits "Goodbye Okinawa", "Akabana", and "Kijimuna Blues", produced by Teiichi Chinen in the 1990s for Nenes.

【Message Regarding the Reissue of Akabana

In 1978, six years had passed since Okinawa's return to Japan. Okinawan youth had turned their attention to Tokyo, becoming more centrally oriented, and I, at the time, had a sense of crisis that Okinawa would be forgotten. I remember having countless discussions overnight with my musical colleagues about this issue.

To convey the greatness of Okinawa to the youth once again, I decided to debut on the mainland and release Akabana. Initially, this recording was planned to be like a documentation of Okinawan folk songs. However, when we included "Goodbye Okinawa" in the demo tape, it was well-received by audience, and we successfully shifted the plan to an "original album" concept.

Okinawan music is inherently full of pop sensibility. I wanted to convey this in a straightforward manner, so I crafted the lyrics and melodies to be more pop, rock, and soul. Moreover, with the excellent arrangement and musicians involved, the performances are outstanding.

Encountering reggae was also fateful. When I first experienced reggae at a Bob Marley concert, I was deeply impressed. Its rhythm was identical to that of Okinawan folk songs. This event allowed me to rediscover and reaffirm the greatness of Okinawan music. I promptly incorporated it into "Goodbye Okinawa," and thereafter, I frequently used that rhythm in songs for Nenes and others.

Akabana from 1978 was a message to the youth, urging them to rediscover Okinawa. It holds significant meaning as a new beginning or rather, a return to my roots. I hope you take this opportunity with the reissue to listen to the source of Okinawan pop music based on island folk songs, which is still being passed down to Nenes today.
